Scan File Uploads For Viruses and Malware

If you accept file uploads with your online forms, it’s important to scan them for viruses and malware. Otherwise, attackers could hide malicious code within uploaded files that your staff open or download, potentially causing damage to your organisation’s systems. Virus scanning at the point of upload reduces the threat surface, prevents internal infections and lateral movement, helps your organisation comply with regulations (including GDPR and HIPAA), and demonstrates that you are proactive about mitigating risk. Hackers often exploit vulnerabilities in file upload functionality by injecting malware into the file itself, rendering it useless to the end user. Moreover, many automated web application security scanners don’t recognise this as a specialised use case and are therefore more likely to miss such attacks.

The Importance of Scanning File Uploads in Modern Cybersecurity

To protect your applications from these threats, you can scan for viruses and malware with the Uploadcare malware scanning service. The Uploadcare REST API provides ClamAV scanning for any project, using either a public or private key pair. The instructions for how to use the SDKs vary by programming language but are generally straightforward.

To enable upload scanning, navigate to the Get Started page and select Scan File Uploads. Enter a unique upload name and click Next. Note that this is the only field that requires a value, but it’s best to be as descriptive as possible to make it easier to manage your file uploads later on. Select a network to designate for this scan, and click Next. Finally, select Enable Auto URBA to trigger an Update Remediation by Assessment run when this scan upload is processed.
