The pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) cultivar Wonderful is a widely grown commercial fruit variety that is characterized by its firm, glossy skin and deep red color. However, a common problem during the harvest season is skin cracking and russeting, which are caused by lignification of the cuticle. To investigate the onset of these symptoms, we carried out transcriptome analyses of the colored peel tissue in fruit at three developmental stages: early fruit with dark green skin; mid-growth, a few days before the start of color break; and ripening, just a few weeks before the commercial harvest at 22 weeks after petal fall (Figure 1).
Unveiling the Richness: Exploring the Pomegranate Color Code and Its Symbolism
We identified several genes encoding for proteins involved in cutin and suberin biosynthesis and showed that their expression was upregulated during ripening. Moreover, a large number of genes related to the formation and regulation of phenolic compounds were also upregulated in the ripening fruit. In addition, the synthesis of two important metabolites, anthocyanins and hydrolyzable tannins, was enhanced during ripening, in line with the visual enhancement of the red coloration.
