In 2019, 16.8% of people nationally reported using cannabis in the previous three months, higher than estimates based on pre-legalization results from other population level surveys. This is likely due to participation bias — those who are more likely to use cannabis will be more likely to respond to the NCS.

The number of cannabis stores increased dramatically in Alberta, while Ontario and British Columbia experienced slower growth. The amount of cannabis sold also varied significantly by province. Retail sales of dried cannabis were the highest, with inhaled extracts coming in second.
Approximately 9 out of 10 Canadians agreed that it was not okay to consume cannabis while pregnant or breastfeeding. This proportion remained unchanged from 2019 and 2023. It is still illegal to bring cannabis into Canada, even if it’s for personal consumption. If you are caught, you can face criminal charges. However, CBSA officers rarely interrogate visitors about their personal weed use when entering the country.
